Forced-entry-resistant construction is intended to delay an adversary long enough for the security plan to work. That makes time central to the requirement. Owners should define the credible tools, attack method, number of attackers, accessible surfaces and required delay in relation to a realistic detection and response sequence.
Define the performance scenario
A request for a “forced-entry-resistant room” is incomplete. The design basis should identify who or what is protected, likely approach paths, tool categories, attack duration, response assumptions and acceptance criteria. It should also state whether the objective includes ballistic, blast or other threats, because one type of resistance does not automatically establish another.
Trace the entire attack path
An attacker will use the easiest available route, not the component with the strongest test report. Review:
- Walls, corners, joints and wall-to-structure connections.
- Doors, frames, hardware, hinges, locks and anchorage.
- Glazing, frames and adjacent wall transitions.
- Ceilings, roofs, floors and raised-access systems.
- Vents, louvers, utility penetrations and access panels.
- Conditions that allow leverage, concealment or repeated attack.
Coordinate security with life safety
Doors and secure rooms must still meet applicable egress, accessibility and fire-protection requirements. Emergency responders may need access. Staff must understand lockdown and release procedures. Hardware that performs well in a test but creates unsafe day-to-day use is not a complete solution.
Match delay to detection and response
A forced-entry layer is most useful when the attempt is detected early and a capable response is initiated. Owners should use realistic response times, including verification and communication—not an idealized number from a tabletop exercise. If the required delay is impractical, consider relocating the asset, adding internal layers or changing operating procedures.
Ask for assembly-level evidence
Review test reports for the complete configuration, including dimensions, support, fasteners, hardware and attack protocol. Identify differences between tested and proposed conditions. A door-leaf claim does not establish frame or wall performance, and a wall material test does not establish the joints.
Protect the requirement during procurement
- List the performance scenario and applicable criteria.
- Assign design responsibility for each interface.
- Require coordinated submittals before fabrication.
- Define mock-up, inspection and acceptance steps.
- Control substitutions through documented equivalency review.
- Deliver operating, inspection and repair instructions at turnover.
