Openings concentrate competing requirements. They must support daily traffic, accessibility, emergency egress, fire protection, weather control, visibility and security. When these requirements are assigned to separate vendors without an assembly-level decision, the weakest interface can control performance.
The owner should define the complete opening: leaf or glazing, frame, anchorage, rough opening, surrounding construction, sill, head, hardware, power, controls and adjacent penetrations.
Match the evidence to the proposed assembly
Ask whether the test covered the same opening type, size, material, frame, anchorage and supporting construction proposed for the project. A product rating may not transfer to a larger lite, different mullion, alternate substrate or field-built connection. Record allowable variations and require specific review of deviations.
For ballistic or forced-entry objectives, determine whether the evaluation addressed multiple impacts, attack duration, tools, joints and the pass/fail criterion relevant to the project. Do not treat labels from body armor, burglary glazing or unrelated impact tests as interchangeable with building-assembly evidence.
Coordinate the surrounding wall and anchors
A strong door in a weak wall may pull away with its frame. A protective wall can be compromised by an unreinforced jamb, discontinuous infill or anchors that were never designed for the security load. Details should show edge distance, embedment, reinforcement, welding, fastener access and tolerances.
Existing construction needs field verification. Drawings may not reveal hollow cells, deteriorated concrete, concealed utilities or prior alterations. Establish investigation and repair procedures before procurement locks the project into an anchorage concept.
Protect egress and emergency operations
Security hardware must not prevent required exit use. Fail-safe, fail-secure and mechanical override decisions should be coordinated with applicable codes, the authority having jurisdiction and operating procedures. Firefighter access, lockdown, emergency release and loss-of-power behavior all need explicit sequences.
Do not add secondary bars, cables or improvised locking devices after occupancy without life-safety review. A device that increases delay from the outside can create an unacceptable hazard from the inside.

Maintain configuration over the opening’s life
Door closers, hinges, strikes, seals and access-control devices wear and drift. Glazing can be replaced with a visually similar but different product. Require a component schedule, inspection criteria and change-control process so repairs do not quietly remove the intended performance.

Does security glazing automatically provide forced-entry resistance?

Should access control be included in the opening specification?
