A door, wall or glazing system described as “intrusion resistant” may have been evaluated for a very different event than the owner intends. Burglary impact, spontaneous-mob tools, active-shooter attack and agency forced-entry criteria use different sequences, tools and outcomes.

Before selecting a level, define what attack the facility is planning against and how much verified delay is useful to the response concept.

Choose a method that represents the threat

ASTM F3038 evaluates the time required to create a passable opening using specified hand tools and procedures. Other standards may address fenestration after simulated active-shooter attack or government forced-entry and ballistic criteria. Confirm scope, edition and applicability with the project authority.

Do not combine a ballistic rating and a burglary rating into an unsupported forced-entry claim. Each result should be stated separately unless a recognized combined test was performed.

Specify the complete assembly

Forced entry targets interfaces. Test and specify door leaves, frames, anchors, locks, hinges, glazing, mullions, walls, joints, louvers, hatches and penetrations as complete systems. A robust panel attached to a weak substrate can fail at the boundary long before the panel is defeated.

Size and multiplicity matter. Double doors, sidelights, transoms, field-mulled systems and larger openings may not behave like a single tested specimen.

Connect attack time to response time

Test time is not identical to real-world delay, but it provides a controlled comparison. The security plan should document detection, assessment, dispatch and intervention assumptions. If the attack can begin before an alarm is generated, the full response timeline starts later than teams often assume.

Add margin for nuisance alarms, staffing variability and delayed external response. Where response cannot arrive within the supported delay, consider internal zoning, protected refuge, remote shutdown or additional layers.

Control substitutions and installation

A change in hardware, fastener, frame reinforcement or wall substrate can alter performance. Require test evidence for the proposed configuration, a deviation schedule and qualified review. Inspect anchors and reinforcement before concealment and commission every operating mode.

Maintenance is part of performance. Loose hardware, misaligned latches and field-modified access-control devices can reduce delay. Create inspection and repair criteria based on the security objective.

Keep life safety explicit

Forced-entry delay from the attack side must not create prohibited restrictions on emergency egress. Coordinate locking, release, fire-alarm interfaces, accessibility and emergency responder access with applicable codes and authorities. Security and life safety are simultaneous design requirements.
